Lieutenant Frank Klibbe, on an escort mission to Munster, jumped a Bf 109 but had the kill stolen by a P-38 that intervened. As he was climbing back to altitude, he noticed that his wingman was firing at him and had turned into a Focke-Wulf as well. Evading the first burst Klibbe yanked his Thunderbolt, named "Little Chief", into a hard break turn and got into an exhausting turning contest with the Focke-Wulf that lasted for almost twelve minutes before the Fw 190 finally broke off. The German pilot fired several times but failed to score a hit. Lt. Klibbe was grateful to survive.
